Salisbury Association Land Steward Job Description
The position is for a part-time employee working up to 10 hours a week.
The position reports to the Land Trust Committee Chair.
Compensation commensurate with experience.
Basic responsibilities of the Land Steward include:
Conservation Easements
Monitor each easement annually, or ensure that a volunteer completes the monitoring
File monitoring reports
Document and report violations
Foster healthy landowner relations
Recruit, organize and supervise volunteer easement monitors
Schedule Stewardship Committee meetings as needed
Fee Preserves
Monitor each fee preserve annually, or ensure that a volunteer completes the monitoring
File monitoring reports
Post the preserve boundaries and maintain boundary signs
Document and report encroachments and property damage
Execute preserve and trail stewardship according to the Annual Stewardship and Management Plans
Recruit, organize and supervise volunteer preserve monitors and stewardship volunteers
Manage contractor activity on stewardship projects including mowing and invasive control
Administration
Attend monthly Land Trust meetings
Help write Annual Stewardship Plan
Maintain property files
File timesheets regularly
Track mileage and expenses accurately
Maintain weekly contact with the Land Trust Chairperson
Coordinate volunteer management, time tracking, training
Document volunteer activities for social media and website content as it pertains to Land Stewardship
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications – Required
Knowledge and ability to navigate off-trail using a map and compass
Ability to hike over rough terrain carrying heavy load of gear and equipment
Ability to read survey maps and navigate from metes and bounds
Ability to communicate clearly, professionally and correctly, both in writing and orally
Education or experience in trail maintenance
Valid vehicle driver’s license and personal vehicle with proof of insurance
Interest in and ability to recruit, organize, supervise, and reward volunteers
Ability to work or attend meetings outside normal business hours (nights and weekends)
Ability to manage work time efficiently with minimal supervision
Qualifications – Desired
Familiarity with mapping software, Google Earth, and GPS
Knowledge and ability to operate a chainsaw and hand tools safely – certification is a plus
Strong technology skills
Science background or an interest in the ecological and conservation sciences
Knowledge of local geography and other conserved lands
Valid First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification
