SUMMARY:The American Revolutionary War in the Northern Colonies - Tom Key talk at the Scoville Memorial Library
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 9\, 2025\n4:00 PM – 5:00 PM\nScoville Memorial Library\n 38 Main Street\, Salisbury \nThe battles in the Northern Colonies didn’t win the revolution\, but they helped set the stage for victory. The defeat of the British at Saratoga convinced the French to send troops to assist the colonists. Washington\, primarily because he kept his army together through difficult times with little help from Congress\, was finally acclaimed the rightful leader of the army and the fledgling nation. And finally\, the British in the Northern Colonies were confined to New York City only. \nRegistration is required and available here. \nThis event is in connection with the community READ of Revolution Song by Russell Shorto. Join us in reading and discussing Revolution Song\, and come participate in a variety of related events during the second annual Salisbury READS\, October 2025 through March 2026. \nThis year’s READ is presented in partnership with the Salisbury Association\, the Salisbury Forum\, the Scoville Memorial Library\, and the Troutbeck Symposium. \nTo learn more and see the whole calendar of events\, please visit Salisbury READS. \nThis talk will take us from the early battles of Ticonderoga (led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold\, both from Connecticut) and Quebec (led by General Montgomery and Arnold) to the final battle in the Northern Colonies at Monmouth Court House. The battle\, though actually a draw\, showed that the Colonials could stand up to British regulars. \nWe will discuss how Washington was badly beaten at Brandywine Creek while his chief rival for command\, Horatio Gates\, was winning at Saratoga. We’ll also recall how the British army surrendered and was marched from Boston to Virginia\, passing through Salisbury and camping at our own Stiles Meadow. \nWe’ll ask key questions about strategy\, class\, religion and commitments: Why did the Thirteen Colonies fail to get the Canadian colonies to rebel? Was a class divide maintained despite the declaration that “all men are created equal”? And why did General Arnold betray the Colonies? Was it money\, his Tory wife\, the mob\, the belief the British would win\, hurt feelings\, or something else? \nAfter graduating with a BS Engineering from University of Tennessee\, Thomas Key spent four years on active duty as a Flight Officer\, US Navy\, and seventeen years in the Naval Air Reserves\, retiring as a Commander\, USNR. His professional career was with an international engineering firm\, designing and constructing steel mills\, nuclear and fossil power plants\, and chemical plants\, etc. He also served as CEO of two subsidiary engineering firms. Thomas Key has a secondary career as a landscape painter and has exhibited in over thirty galleries and invitational/juried shows from Delaware to Maine.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 100 Years of Ski Jumping in Salisbury
DESCRIPTION:Norwegian immigrant John Satre gave a ski jumping demonstration off the roof of a hillside cabin in 1926\, setting in motion one of the most improbable and unique traditions in Salisbury\, CT. \nEnthused by what they saw\, residents built a ski jump and hosted their first competition in January 1927. Other world-class Norwegian Nordic skiers and ski jumpers joined John forming a core group that introduced Nordic sports to the community.  The Salisbury Winter Sports Association\, SWSA\, and its predecessor organization formed to support every aspect of that effort including organizing and hosting regional and national junior competitions held at John Satre Memorial Hill. \nToday\, Satre Hill is the site for a 70 meter state-of-the art tower that is a prerequisite for ski jumpers who aspire to Junior National Team designation.  At adjoining Hewat Hill\, youngsters train on a 20 meter jump and the recently completed 36 meter tower. \nOpening with a reception on January 16th at 4:00\, the Salisbury Association presents an exhibit honoring the 100th anniversary of ski jumping in Salisbury and SWSA’s contributions to winter sports and the community. \nThe exhibit will run through mid-March. \nExtended Hours for the SWSA Exhibit at the Salisbury Association over Jumpfest Weekend! \nFriday\, February 6th\, 10 a.m.  – 4 p.m.\nSaturday\, February 7th\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\nSunday\, February 8th\, 11 a.m. -1 p.m.

SUMMARY:Salisbury Conservation Commission 2026 Upcoming Event

Let’s keep our night skies dark! \nPlease join the Cornwall\, Salisbury and Sharon Conservation Commissions\, and the Salisbury Association Land Trust\, in collaboration with the Sharon Audubon Center\, to learn how we can mitigate night sky light pollution impacts. \nSpeakers: Craig Repasz\, Co-Founder of the Lights Out Connecticut and Leo Smith\, Northeast Regional Director and Connecticut Chapter Chair of DarkSky. \nFebruary 26th 6:00 p.m. Sharon Audubon\, 325 Cornwall Bridge Road\, Sharon\, CT. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Litchfield County in the American Revolution with Peter Vermilyea
DESCRIPTION:This program is presented by the Scoville Library in partnership with the Salisbury Association Historical Society and in connection with Salisbury Commemorates 250 and CT 250. \nJoin us for the launch of Peter C. Vermilyea’s Litchfield County in the American Revolution. This vital history reveals how liberty\, sacrifice\, and resilience in Northwest Connecticut helped shape the destiny of a new nation. Illuminating the lives of renowned and little-known local figures\, Vermilyea explores the personal dilemmas\, divided loyalties\, and local consequences of the Revolutionary War. \nA reading and discussion followed by a reception with refreshments \nAbout the Book\nFrom the first sparks of revolution in the 1770s\, Litchfield County played an important role in the War of Independence. Roger Sherman of New Milford was on the five-member committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. Oliver Wolcott of Litchfield signed the document and oversaw the transportation of a toppled statue of King George III from New York City to his hometown\, where it was melted down and turned into more than forty thousand musket balls. Those musket balls were perhaps fired by hundreds of local militia\, including Black residents\, who served in the war\, while many other residents helped furnish supplies and information for the army. However\, not everyone supported the Patriot cause\, as the county was also home to those who remained loyal to the British King. Later years saw the Continental Army make a winter encampment in New Milford and several visits by George Washington. Local author and historian Peter Vermilyea reveals how liberty\, sacrifice\, and resilience in a small corner of New England helped shape the destiny of a new nation. \nAbout the Author\nPeter C. Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village\, Connecticut\, and for the University of Connecticut. A graduate of Gettysburg College\, he is the director of the teacher scholarship program at his alma mater’s Civil War Institute and a Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History master teacher. Vermilyea is the author or editor of six books\, including Hidden History of Litchfield County\, which received the 2015 CultureMax Award; Wicked Litchfield County; and Litchfield County and the Civil War. He and his wife\, Jill\, have two adult sons and live in Litchfield\, CT. \nRegistration is required and available here.
