SUMMARY:Celebrating 100 Years of Ski Jumping in Salisbury
DESCRIPTION:Norwegian immigrant John Satre gave a ski jumping demonstration off the roof of a hillside cabin in 1926\, setting in motion one of the most improbable and unique traditions in Salisbury\, CT. \nEnthused by what they saw\, residents built a ski jump and hosted their first competition in January 1927. Other world-class Norwegian Nordic skiers and ski jumpers joined John forming a core group that introduced Nordic sports to the community.  The Salisbury Winter Sports Association\, SWSA\, and its predecessor organization formed to support every aspect of that effort including organizing and hosting regional and national junior competitions held at John Satre Memorial Hill. \nToday\, Satre Hill is the site for a 70 meter state-of-the art tower that is a prerequisite for ski jumpers who aspire to Junior National Team designation.  At adjoining Hewat Hill\, youngsters train on a 20 meter jump and the recently completed 36 meter tower. \nOpening with a reception on January 16th at 4:00\, the Salisbury Association presents an exhibit honoring the 100th anniversary of ski jumping in Salisbury and SWSA’s contributions to winter sports and the community. \nThe exhibit will run through mid-March. \nExtended Hours for the SWSA Exhibit at the Salisbury Association over Jumpfest Weekend! \nFriday\, February 6th\, 10 a.m.  – 4 p.m.\nSaturday\, February 7th\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\nSunday\, February 8th\, 11 a.m. -1 p.m.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Litchfield County in the American Revolution with Peter Vermilyea
DESCRIPTION:This program is presented by the Scoville Library in partnership with the Salisbury Association Historical Society and in connection with Salisbury Commemorates 250 and CT 250. \nJoin us for the launch of Peter C. Vermilyea’s Litchfield County in the American Revolution. This vital history reveals how liberty\, sacrifice\, and resilience in Northwest Connecticut helped shape the destiny of a new nation. Illuminating the lives of renowned and little-known local figures\, Vermilyea explores the personal dilemmas\, divided loyalties\, and local consequences of the Revolutionary War. \nA reading and discussion followed by a reception with refreshments \nAbout the Book\nFrom the first sparks of revolution in the 1770s\, Litchfield County played an important role in the War of Independence. Roger Sherman of New Milford was on the five-member committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. Oliver Wolcott of Litchfield signed the document and oversaw the transportation of a toppled statue of King George III from New York City to his hometown\, where it was melted down and turned into more than forty thousand musket balls. Those musket balls were perhaps fired by hundreds of local militia\, including Black residents\, who served in the war\, while many other residents helped furnish supplies and information for the army. However\, not everyone supported the Patriot cause\, as the county was also home to those who remained loyal to the British King. Later years saw the Continental Army make a winter encampment in New Milford and several visits by George Washington. Local author and historian Peter Vermilyea reveals how liberty\, sacrifice\, and resilience in a small corner of New England helped shape the destiny of a new nation. \nAbout the Author\nPeter C. Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village\, Connecticut\, and for the University of Connecticut. A graduate of Gettysburg College\, he is the director of the teacher scholarship program at his alma mater’s Civil War Institute and a Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History master teacher. Vermilyea is the author or editor of six books\, including Hidden History of Litchfield County\, which received the 2015 CultureMax Award; Wicked Litchfield County; and Litchfield County and the Civil War. He and his wife\, Jill\, have two adult sons and live in Litchfield\, CT. \nRegistration is required and available here.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Tom Shachtman\, A JERICHO’S COBBLE MISCELLANY
DESCRIPTION:Join author Tom Shachtman in conversation for the launch of his new book\, A JERICHO’S COBBLE MISCELLANY (April 2026\, Madville Publishing)\, a genre-bending novel depicting a New England town through over 100 voices. Told via diaries\, letters\, and objects\, it explores community\, history\, and tension. \nThis “miscellany” is a portrait of a fictional New England small town over the past several hundred years\, celebratory and insightful\, its stories recounted by more than a hundred voices\, those of the living—white\, Black\, Native American\, male\, female\, gay—and of the dead\, and also of inanimate objects—a neglected upright piano\, a bench along a nature trail—in poems\, dialogues\, roadside markers\, tombstones\, business brochures\, newspaper articles\, a playlet\, diary entries\, oral history transcripts\, a stitched sampler\, and even a nursery rhyme. Some tales are of quiet happiness\, others of roiling passions\, moral quandaries\, tragedy and comedy; above all they speak to the centrality of community and continuity in our lives.
